About merde magazine
PRINT ISN’T DEAD
MERDE aims to satisfy the post-modern desire to hold something in one’s hands, and escape the endless digital scroll. We print sustainably with a certified recycling friendly printer in Riga, Latvia. We print in small batches to avoid waste, although we are proud to work with the agency KD PRESSE in Paris that turns magazine waste into vegetables. You read that right. Leftover unsold MERDE’s are now ripe tomatoes grown in France.
In Pontenx-les-Forges, a commune in the Landes department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Energy Recovery Unit (UVE) is used directly to supply renewable energy to an eco-greenhouse in which tomatoes are grown.
Greenhouse tomato production that is more respectful of the environment. This is what the energy recovery of waste in Pontenx-les-Forges (40) allows. Indeed, the heat from the combustion of waste at the UVE (Energy Recovery Unit) provides 80% of the energy needed to heat the tomato greenhouse in the Great Lakes, located one kilometer away, Parentis-en-Born. Waste treatment at UVE produces water vapour, which then feeds an underground heat network. That is the equivalent of 42,000 MWh of energy, explains Alain Cribeillet, Director of the Pontenx-les-Forges site. Without forgetting, in parallel, 15,000 MWh which arrives in the form of electricity. »
This project is a collaboration between Tiru, a subsidiary of Paprec Energies, and the agricultural cooperative Tom d'Aqui, which operates this greenhouse. This joint work has enabled the site, owned by SIVOM du Born, to triple its production of renewable energy since .
A VIRTUOUS APPROACH FOR MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TOMATO PRODUCTION
The plant manages 42,000 tons of household waste each year, collected from the 35,000 inhabitants spread over 16 municipalities in the north of the Landes. "The heat is now fully recovered, which has increased the energy performance of the energy recovery unit (UVE) in Pontenx-les-Forges by 34 to 80%, while providing the greenhouse with access to renewable energy, rejoices Eric Soules, president of SIVOM du Born. It is a very virtuous approach of proximity and circularity for the territory. Learn More
