MERDE x Lot28
Upside
A jewelry collection inspired by the upside benefits of fungi in slowing global climate change.
Lot28’s new collection Upside marks a pivotal shift for the DeSisto sisters' design language. While their past collections were designed to spread awareness about pressing climate issues, Upside aims to shift the conversation towards sustainable solutions for us and our planet.
Two Farenehit, their debut fine jewelry capsule, was symbolic of the two degree change in ocean water temperature that can cause coral bleaching. Each piece was named after an ocean organism that is vital to the health of our oceans.
Yet the designers found themselves at a unique crossroads starting this collection.
They kept asking themselves;
How can we change our perspective?
What inspires people to change?
Is there an upside?
It was this questioning and their recent deep dive into the incredible world of fungi that gave way to their new collection. Upside is designed to share the upside solutions that fungi present in slowing global climate change.
Knowledge is power. So if you will, follow us through the incredible super powers of fungi.
Our biggest environmental concern is greenhouse gases changing atmospheric conditions. Trees are the largest natural source in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They take in carbon dioxide through the process of photosynthesis and release oxygen back into the air. The tree uses part of that carbon to grow but then transfers the remaining carbon into the ground. It is then handed off to the fungi in the form of soil organic carbon. Fungi are the final step in the earth's natural process of reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
One of the best ways we can help is by protecting our forest and letting fungi carry out their natural processes.
The DeSisto sisters founded Lot28 in 2018. The brand was born from a love for jewelry and the natural world. The sisters grew up on an island in Maine surrounded by nature, the plot of land was called Lot28. This is where their love of sustainability originated.
