Nudes for Black Lives Matter
Nudes for BLM is a series of photographs highlighting the racism and colorism behind the use of the term “nude” in women’s undergarments. The color nude is much more than “a pale pinkish-beige color”, as the Oxford dictionary defines it. These photographs have been turned into postcards to serve as an introductory sentence to a complex conversation. By writing and sending the postcards, the donor participates in the artwork and initiates urgent conversations on racism directly to new doorsteps.
Mayomi Basnayaka is a Sri Lankan contemporary artist. She was born in Saudi Arabia, raised in Japan, and was art and design educated in France. Being a citizen of everywhere and nowhere, her art reflects the complexities of multiculturalism. Her work aims to question barriers around identity and encourages liberation from various cultural taboo associations.
