A Note from the Producer:
Nostalgia is often a determining factor in fashion trends, and Gen Z is rekindling the stylings of the so-called Y2K era. POV you’re walking the streets and TikTokkers in the wild are donning pleated skirts, Baguette Bags and baby tees. Is it a coincidence that this fashion trend made a resurgence as the corona pandemic spread around the world? Probably not. It was the time of performing Baby One More Time in front of the mirror and posting super-long bulletins on Myspace. A time before smartphones and bad news was at our fingertips. A time when you were the superstar of your bedroom.
It makes sense for era marked by the Y2K panic to makes its resurgence in an era of pandemics, war and an impending climate calamity. The Y2K style is intrinsically connected to the teeny bedroom of the early 2000s. Magazines were butchered to decorate our walls with our favourite pop-stars, whose low-rise jeans we envisioned on our own pubescent bodies.
The current revival of Y2K style has, however, developed itself. The times have changed since Justin could freely brag about taking Britney’s virginity. Sex positivity is now a celebrsted concept. Instead of customising myspace backgrounds for hours, we’re taking ownership of our sexuality and proudly uploading videos to Onlyfans. The current style could be described as My Only Fans Space. Sexy and nostalgic. It doesn’t matter what gender or identity within that spectrum you are. The updated Y2K style allows him/her/them to have his/ her/their 2001 Britney VMA moment. Whether it is with a real snake, furry snake or human snake, it doesn’t matter and you can choose.
