”Being a queer visual artist lends itself to the exploration of dynamics within the queer community through storytelling within my images. It is important for me to rebel against conventionality in the creative world by creating bodies of work that amplify fluidity in self expression, sensuality, and within the rawness of one’s identity.
Growing up in Silver Lake during the 90s felt very magical and nostalgic. Me and all the kids on my block would always gather around and play outdoors, and would invite each other to our birthday parties where our mom's would document every moment through photographs. My mom always kept every photo from my childhood in pristine shape by making photo albums. I would flip through these albums as they served as time portals to my childhood. A lot of my interest in photography started with these photos from my childhood. So whenever I'm in Silver Lake, I feel a deeper appreciation for it than it just being my home city.
During this shoot, Elliot and I met for the first time. We got to explore each other's creative sides as it was a very run and gun styled shoot. We had to run away several times from the security guard who kept catching us on private property. That movement ended up working for the shoot, as it created a sense of motion as well as a rebellion.” - Luca Mastro
